Wiffen Wins Men's Title

Shane WiffenShane Wiffen showed why he is one of the grittiest competitors at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club when he recently claimed his first Mens Singles title with a hard fought 6-4 4-6 7-6 win over his much younger opponent Jacob Grills in the final.  Shane survived a bout of cramps on match point after he recovered from an early deficit in the third set.

Shane's path to the final was eased when number one seed Justin Robinson was defeated in an upset by 16 year old Ari Levinson, whilst Jacob's draw was helped when the 2009 champion and number two seed Matthew Holschier had to withdraw with illness from his first round match against Matheson Grills.  Jacob and Matheson received some compensation when they defeated Grant Porter and Steve Donaldson to take out the Men's Doubles title.  In the Ladies Singles, it was a different story with number one seed Olivia Rich adding to her 2006 and 2008 titles with a dominant performance against 14 year old Abbie Walker winning 6-2 6-0.  Overall, eighty five members participated in this years event in junior, open and over 40 singles and doubles matches.  For a full list of results, click here.
