


In their first season together, our Section 2 team in the Tennis Geelong Senior competition had a very successful season by reaching the final, and losing narrowly to a Grovedale team. The team started the season slowly with a number of mixed combinations being tried during the course of the season, but finished strongly in 2nd place on the ladder.

Shane Wiffen showed why he is one of the grittiest competitors at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club when he recently claimed his first Mens Singles title with a hard fought 6-4 4-6 7-6 win over his much younger opponent Jacob Grills in the final. Shane survived a bout of cramps on match point after he recovered from an early deficit in the third set.

Over one hundred and forty members and guests heard club president Bob Spurling outline the bid to enter teams in the 2010 State Grade tennis competition at a recent fundraiser dinner, with club sponsor Truffleduck Receptions newly renovated Balmoral Receptions at Fyansford providing an outstanding venue. Keynote speaker Craig Morris, Tennis Australia's Manager of Athlete Development praised the club on the initiative, describing State Grade tennis as providing the perfect competitive pathway for talented regional junior players.
