Squash Members Success

For the second year running Geelong Lawn Tennis Club members have been part of a Geelong team that have won the prestigious Hopman Cup. On the weekend the Victorian Regional Squash Teams Championship’s were held at Gladstone Park squash centre where three major title’s were up for grabs. Geelong contested two of these, the Hopman Cup and the Royal Trophy.  The Hopman cup is so named after the same Harry Hopman of tennis fame.  Like current tennis stars Federer,Nadal and Murray he was also champion squash player and a perpetual trophy was created in his honour and is contested by all the Victorian regional centres annually. The coveted trophy has ended up in Geelong again for the 14th time in 20 years.

Pilates Classes

Geelong Lawn Tennis Club continues its evolution to a destination venue for racquet & fitness enthusiasts with the commencement in July of Pilates classes in the new group exercise area.  Coupled with the development of the fitness studio in 2009, personal training, and the addition of group exercise and massage therapist services in 2011, the club is developing into a venue devoted to racquet sports and health & wellbeing.  The Pilates classes will be conducted by fully certified Stott instructor Alana Mueller, who brings to the club a wealth of experience at all levels since commencing teaching Pilates in 2002.  Classes will be held on Wednesday mornings at 6.30am, 9.15am & 10.30am.  Click here for more details about Alana and here for class details.

2011 Club Tennis Championships

Friday 18th March saw the conclusion of the 128th Club Tennis Championships.  The feature events saw a classic battle between youth and experience, with Matthew Holschier taking on veteran Justin Robinson, and Ramona Mataruga against Fiona Walker.  20 year old Holschier played inspired tennis at times to snatch the title from Robinson's grasp in a see sawing battle.  The final score was 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), with Matthew being down 3-0 in the final set tie breaker.  In the Ladies, 15 year old Ramona was too strong from the back of the court, with Fiona relying on her fitness to maintain the rallies.  Fiona fought hard, with the final score 6-2 6-3 to Ramona.  Click here to view all the results.

2011 Presidents Dinner

Over 130 members and guests attended the inaugaral Presidents Dinner at Lyndon Grove Receptions in Grovedale, and had a great evening.  A beautiful meal was provided by club sponsor Richard Kelly from The RK Group, and club member Imogen Brough added to the ambience with her lovely voice & some contemporary music.
